Teepee or Tipi?

Tipi or Teepee, this is a much debated topic. You can also find the Tipi (Teepee) described at a Tepee. Either way they are a very old structure traditionally used for shelter. Teepee or Tipi have been described as a Lodge, or a tent – all of them traditionally are made of animal skins stretched across wooden poles and are used for shelter.

The history of Teepee or Tipi

Historically, the tipi or teepee was used by the indigenous people of the plains and Canadian prairies of north America. They have been used by the many tribes of that area, and in some cases still used in this way today. These people use the tipi primarily for ceremonial purposes rather than the day to day living.

Teepee or Tipi today

The teepee used today is usually made from a canvas but still keeping the wooden poles. We at Blue Sky Tipis use a hard-wearing, waterproof coated canvas which was manufactured here in the UK. We believe the Tipi structure to be as important now as is has been historically, and many ceremonies and celebrations are held every year in our Canvas tipi structures.
